ViaVersion is a suite of plugins that allow players to join with older and newer clients than what the server would natively support without them.
ViaVersion[edit]
ViaVersion allows newer clients to connect to an older server.
ViaBackwards[edit]
ViaBackwards allows older clients from 1.9 and above to connect to a newer server.
ViaRewind[edit]
ViaRewind allows very old clients from 1.7.2 to 1.8.9 to connect to a newer server.
