NitoriBot is a Kaboom/Savage Friends bot made by Parker2991. It might be the oldest still maintained node-minecraft-protocol bot.
It was originally written for fun but it was gradually maintained more and more, it was originally designed for Ayunboom before Creayun but development paused, until the developer recalled Chipmunk telling him about Kaboom.
History
Versions before v7 featured numerous contributions from other people, but in the beginning of v7's development cycle Parker2991 decided to attempt to write it with as little outside help as possible, and he succeeded.
Naming
A lot of names were considered in pre-release versions:
- ParkerBot
- DemonBot
- WoomyBot
- BoyfriendBot
Eventually, Parker2991 would settle on using FNFBoyfriendBot until v9.0.0, where it was renamed to NitoriBot in light of his newfound enjoyment of theTouhou Project. Additionally, the Touhou character it is named after enjoys tinkering with technology, and is one of Parker2991's favorite Touhou characters).
v9.0.0's development cycle is kinda weird, because Parker2991 tried rewriting it several times in 2 programming languages. during the development he tried rewriting it in TypeScript 5 to 6 times and it didnt feel right, and now its being rewrote in Java.
during the development of v4.x series, several versions were lost due to _yfd doxing one of the admins of amcforum in irc where the bot was being hosted at the time. Parker2991 tried to warn them that it making a irc bot for NitoriBot's discord would lead to doxing but the people of the forum kept asking to add irc and didnt listen which caused Parker to get the blame as such the following versions were lost because the repo was deleted: v4.0.1 all the way to v4.1.9.
Development Cycle
the bot has a development every few months for major releases though v8 took almost a year, the version system goes with the following
v1.2.3-<codename> increment the 1 for every major release increment the 2 for everytime a feature is added increment the 3 for every bug fix
for the codename though that stays with the major version even if there is bug fixes or features added. the current codename is Reignite which is v8.x while the next major release "Night of Nights" is v9.x. though v9.x is a complete rewrite of the bot in Java/MCProtocolLib
